September 4, 2020—Unemployment fell by 1.8 percentage points in August to 8.4 percent. It was the first time since March that the unemployment rate fell below 10 percent.
Still, the number of unemployed remained at 13.6 million, which is 2.8 million below the July number.
The unemployment rate was higher than in February by 4.9 percentage points and by 7.8 million people.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its monthly Employment Situation report providing a snapshot of U.S. jobs as of the first half of August 2020. "The" unemployment rate is the U3 rate.
